I foolishly thought I had made it through this cold and flu season free of illness, then last week I started feeling those telltale chills and aches, as well as the sniffles and sore throat. It was unmistakable that I was coming down with the flu and needed to nip it in the bud. I had a full schedule of meetings for coming weeks and could not be taking sick days. First of all, this ordeal was my own fault for failing to make time to get a flu vaccine in the first place. When you’re in generally good health you just start to assume you are invincible. Also, I have a lot of allergies and am hesitant to take medicines that may contain problematic ingredients. That was now a moot point. I needed Tamiflu and I needed it fast. Would I be able to find it this late in the season? I figured after a certain point pharmacies just stop carrying them for the year. My nearest pharmacy offered me a pleasant surprise. Not only were they able to treat my existing symptoms, but they kept a stock of various flu vaccines all year round, including preservative free flu shots and other varieties that do not trigger common allergies. I commended them for being able to help me when they did, and they explained it is easy for them to stay on top of customer needs with the support of good pharmaceutical suppliers. I would hope that all health care facilities take the cue and start investing in these services.
